Where should smoke detectors be placed in a home?
Smoke detectors should be installed:
- Inside each bedroom
- Outside each sleeping area
- On every level of the home
On floors without bedrooms, place detectors in the living room, near stairways, or in central gathering areas.
How long do smoke detectors last?
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends replacing smoke alarms every 10 years. Over time, the small amount of radiation inside can degrade, causing the detector to lose approximately 3–5% of its effectiveness each year.
Do 10 year lithium batteries really last 10 years?
While marketed as “10-year” batteries, most manufacturers only guarantee them for one year after the package is opened. These batteries are longer lasting than standard ones, but only under optimal conditions will they reach the full 10-year lifespan.
How often should I have my detectors inspected
We recommend a biannual service at minimum. During this service, each alarm is:
- Removed and reset
- Cleaned with compressed air
- Fitted with a new battery
- Fully tested
Regular maintenance helps ensure long-term reliability.
Why do detectors chirp/go off?
Smoke detectors can:
- Mistake dust or insects for smoke
- Chirp to signal a low battery
- Be triggered by bugs attracted to the warmth inside the unit
Routine cleaning can prevent many of these issues.
I changed my batteries—why are my detectors still chirping?
If your detectors continue chirping after a battery change, they may have reached the end of their life. The NFPA recommends replacing detectors 10 years from their manufacturing date. Check the "born-on" date printed on the back of the device to confirm.
